Plot overview
In 1997, something historic happened in Vinton, Va. A baseball team amazed everyone but themselves. They fought through internal wars, suspensions, an attempted coup on their coach, injuries and finally the two best baseball teams in the state of Virginia. What they did, they said couldn't be done.
The 1997 William Byrd Terriers were the epitome of what makes a TEAM a champion. They weren't the most talented, as evident in the fact they had only two seniors go on to play college ball. They were twenty two kids who fought for what they believed in; their coach, their program and most importantly, their TEAM. The result was a storybook finish that rivaled the greatest moment in sports.
Explanation of the novel's title
""One Team, One Dream"" was more than just a catch phrase. It was originally used for the first time by Randall Sell in a gym during a team meeting. It became the mantra of the 1997 Terriers.
Characters
- Rodney Spradlin- Coach of the William Byrd Terriers since 1993. Followed in the footsteps of legendary coach Gary Walthall. Since taking over the program, Spradlin went to two state semi-finals, but never could seem to win the big one.
- Chris Manning- All-State pitcher. Loudmouth, obnoxious, overbearing, but did not hesitate to stand up for his teammates, whether it was against another team, or their own coaches.
- Matt McGuire- Sophomore shortstop. Best player in the Roanoke Valley and possibly the history of William Byrd baseball.
- Brian Rickerson- Senior Captain. Pulled as starting first baseman, but came back to save the day on the mound in the state quarter finals.
- Justin Likens- Senior Captain. All District pitcher in 1996, unable to live up to senior year expectations, but became, essentially, the team's pitching coach due to his knowledge.
- Gary Walthall- Legendary coach. Head coach from '83-92. Came back in '96 as Spradlin's assistant to take some of the heat off.
- Gene Riggs- Assistant Coach. "Player's Coach."
- Randall Sell- Starting 2nd baseman. Last hope in state semi-finals. If you don't know how that turned out, you haven't read the book.
- Parker Humphreys- Starting 3rd baseman. Unofficial "leader" of the team.
- Tommy Chambers- Offensive Juggernaut in postseason.
