Old Gippstown is Gippsland's Heritage Park[1] - an open air museum, a mythical pioneer township, located in Moe, Victoria, Australia.
It portrays the settlement era of Gippsland from 1860's to 1940's.[2] Old Gippstown provides large-scale exhibits illustrating the history of the Gippsland region and was officially opened in 1977.
Today it is a popular tourist attraction, including a pioneer street and village and is set in three hectares of parkland, providing playground, barbecue and picnic facilities, attended by over 100,000 people each year.
Old Gippstown is considered as an integral part of Gippsland's dynamic and diverse culture, assisting in increasing visitation to the region and helping to ensure the local culture remains strong and vibrant.[3]
Old Gippstown is also a community focused not-for-profit organisation that is committed to supporting the local communities by providing facilities and venues to groups to hold festivals, meetings, events and other community gatherings. The park contains some picturesque gardens and outdoor settings that are frequently used for wedding ceremonies and reunions.
As Old Gippstown is a not-for-profit organisation, it is mostly staffed by volunteers who have restored over 40 historical buildings that typify the heritage of the Gippsland area.[4]
The extensive historical collection on display at the park comprises of various antiques, artwork, books and papers, carriages, machinery, tools, and a wide range of unique and forgotten devices all representing the era.
