Ömer Toprak (born 21 July 1989 in Ravensburg) is a Turkish-German footballer who plays for Bayer 04 Leverkusen.[1]

Career

Toprak began his career with FV Ravensburg and was signed by SC Freiburg in summer 2005. He made his first appearance for the senior team in July 2007.

International career

He was part of the German U-19 national team squad that won the U-19 European Championship in 2008. He participated in three matches during the tournament scoring one goal.

On 30 September 2011, Ömer was named to Turkey national football team squad by coach Guus Hiddink for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying matches against Germany and Azerbaijan.[2]

On 15 November, 2011, he made his Turkish debut against Croatia in the second leg of UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying play-offs.

Personal

Toprak is the son of Turkish immigrants from the Sivas region. He was born and raised in Ravensburg in Baden-Württemberg. He has one older sister and two older brothers of which one, Harun, is also a professional football player at Swiss club FC Schaffhausen.

Accident

On 9 June 2009, Toprak was involved in a karting accident, in which he suffered severe burns and had to be treated in a special clinic.[3] He was able to resume training only after four months.[4] On 6 January 2010, Toprak played one half-time period in the friendly match[5] against Elche CF. He has since signed for Bayer Leverkusen.
