Oddball Film+Video was founded in 1984 by Stephen Parr, an archivist, imagemaker and writer. He is the director of Oddball Film+Video.
For over 25 years Oddball Film+Video has been a source for offbeat footage-from strange science to contemporary oddities[1]. Its main business is licensing unusual stock footage to producers of feature films, documentaries, commercials, broadcast television, music videos, as well as web and new media productions. Its primary objective is to create and develop a strong niche market in the stock footage industry by establishing itself as a provider of unique footage while acting as a creative resource for media producers. Oddball Film+Video has provided stock footage for feature films such as Milk[2], documentaries like Ballets Russes and The Weather Underground, television programs like Mythbusters[3], clips for Boing Boing[4] and web projects around the world. Oddball Film+Video’s holdings consist of over 50,000 archival[5] and contemporary 35mm, 16mm and HD media elements, many digitized for immediate online distribution. Oddball Film+Video has thousands of archival newsreels, quirky commercials and movie trailers as well as 1960s and 1970s lifestyle footage, vintage erotica, high technology shots, and footage of exotic locales. Their historical and contemporary collection focuses on the offbeat and unusual although it encompasses all genres, many recently discovered or shot live. Oddball Film+Video also represents collections from cinematographers from around the world-from death-defying stunt footage to exotic HD footage of Asia.
Oddball’s international client list includes ABC News, The American Experience, BBC Television, Canal+, Discovery Channel, MTV, Nokia[6], NBC Universal, Walt Disney Pictures and Yahoo. They have worked with famed directors like Ridley Scott[7], Spike Lee and Gus Van Sant as well as award-winning documentary film makers such as Sam Green and Irving Saraf.
Oddball Films
Oddball Films is the film component of Oddball Film+Video, the largest private film archive in Northern California[8] and one of the most unusual private collections in the United States[9]. Its 6,000 sq ft (560 m2) facility houses historical newsreels encompassing every era, a vast archive of educational and industrial films, home movies, news footage and outtakes, feature films, lifestyle and fashion footage, television commercials, movie trailers and contemporary state of the art High Definition footage in all genres. Oddball Films is committed to the ongoing exhibition of film in a valued and creative context. Their film programs are almost exclusively drawn from a collection of over 50,000 16mm prints of animation, commercials, ‘educationals’, feature films, movie trailers, medical, industrial, military, news out-takes and every genre in between.
Oddball Films actively works to present rarely screened genres of cinema as well as avant-garde and ethno-cultural documentaries which expand the boundaries of conventional cinema[10]. The public is invited to join in their weekly screenings of offbeat cinema[11].
