Capital Helsinki History - Independence December 6 1831 - Southern Finland est. December 31 1997 The Province of Uusimaa (Finnish: Uudenmaan lääni, Swedish: Nyland län) was a province of Finland from 1831 to 1997.
In 1831 the Nyland-Tavastehus Governorate was divided into the Tavastehus Governorate and Nyland Governorate, and was thus formed.
In 1997 it was merged togeather with the Kymi Province and the southern parts of the Häme Province into the new Southern Finland Province.
