Nutritious fruits

Certain fruits are more nutritious than others. Different fruits have different nutrients. For example, the kiwi fruit and oranges are high in vitamin C. Beetroots have anti-oxidants that can help prevent cancer.

Getting children to enjoy nutritious fruits is a particular challenge to them. One way in which fast food restaurants try to contribute to children's good habit of eating nutritious fruits is through the kids meals which incorporate fruits in the package. Comparing the nutrient values of meals offered by major fast food companies with restaurants in Houston, TX, O'Donnell, Hoerr, Mendoza and Goh (2008) found that three percent of these kid meals met all National School Lunch Program (NSLP) criteria. The kid meals that met all criteria offered a side-dish of fruit and milk. Deli sandwiches with fruit and milk represented only 6% of all kids meals offered in Houston, but approximately half of them met the NSLP standards. Raisins was one of the favoured choice of nutritious fruits in kids meals, offering a high iron content. Meals that failed to meet the NSLP standard did so because of the high energy content from fat and the low quantity of calcium, iron, and vitamin A.[1]

Cashew Apple

Most of us are familiar with the cashew nut but not the cashew apple. The cashew apple consists of the kidney-shaped cashew nut and a pseudoapple. The cashew tree (Anarcardium occidentale) is native to Brazil. The cashew apple juice is used in ices and jelly in tropical America. However, in most of Africa, the cashew apples are discarded unused under the trees when the cashew nuts are harvested.[2] On analyzing and comparing the physico-chemical properties of cashew apple with pineapple, orange, grape, mango and lemon, Akinwale (2000) found that cashew apple juice contains almost four times the amount of vitamin C per 100 ml of juice as compared with the popular citrus fruits and more than four times as much vitamin C as in other fruits. The average values of vitamin C in 100 ml of the juices of cashew apple, orange, grape, lemon, mango and pineapple are 203.5 mg, 54.7mg, 45.0mg, 33.7 mg, 30.9 mg and 14.7mg respectively. Akinwale (2000) therefore recommends the processing and consumption of cashew apples, blending it with other tropical fruits in order to improve the acceptability of cashew juice in terms of taste and flavour.[3]
