Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University

The Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University (orig. Новгородский Государственный Университет имени Ярослава Мудрого, НовГУ), also known informally as NovSU is founded in 1993 by merging the two oldest higher education institutions of Veliky Novgorod: the Pedagogical and Polytechnic Institutes. Later, Novgorod Agricultural Academy was included into the structure of the University. At present it comprises seven Institutes (Institute of Electronic and Information Systems, Institute of Humanities, Institute of Medical Education, Institute of Continuous Pedagogical Education, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Institute of Economics and Administration, and Polytechnic Institute) and four Colleges of secondary vocational education (Polytechnic College, College of Economics and Law, College of Pedagogical Education, and College of Medical Education). The Institute of Postgraduate and Complementary Education, Research Center, Scientific Library, Center for New Information Technologies, Innovation Department, Publishing Center, Marketing Center, Press Center, and other subdivisions also exist within the institution.University

It is not common that the Novgorod State University would have the name of Prince Yaroslav the Wise incorporated into its title. On the eve of the University’s first anniversary, the Prince’s personal seal was discovered during archaeological excavations. Academician Yanin considered it a remarkable coincidence and suggested awarding the University the name of the Russian prince.
