Plot summary
It is 1867 and Elizabeth Nelson works at a textile mill, separated from her twin brother Thomas, who is a wax sculptor working for Peter Gustavson, a descendant of the Fiers. One day, a nightmare convinces Elizabeth that something horrible has happened to Thomas. She tells Margaret Thorne, her friend about the nightmare and Margaret informs her of the upcoming exhibition by the famous Gustavson.
Elizabeth and Margaret go to the exhibition, but they do not find Thomas or Gustavson. They do however, meet Patrick Granger, another one of Gustavson's employee's. He assures them Thomas is okay and drives them to Cliff House to prove it. But after they arrive, Thomas is nowhere to be seen.
Soon Margaret falls ill and Jimmy, Gustavson's driver is murdered. Several days later, after she discovers Thomas’s studio on the high tower, Gustavson attacks her and attempts to capture her. She is saved by Miss Virginia Matheson, the housekeeper, and is lead to Gustavson's studio, where she is told Thomas was killed by him, and all of his wax figures have spirits trapped inside them (the Cliff House secret).
Gustavson eventually finds their hideout and Elizabeth is forced to flee. She goes through a passageway which leads to his workshop, filled with many grotesque wax figures. After finding Thomas's and Margaret's figures, she burns all of the wax figures out of rage, taking Gustavson's and Virginia's life with them. Elizabeth manages to escape, though, and discovers her face is severely burnt. So she decides to make herself a new face out of wax from the Cliff House.
