Northern Rocks Bear Weird Vegetable is, technically speaking, both the first studio album and the first live album for Ben Wallers' The Rebel. The album was recorded live in WFMU's New Jersey studio in March 2008 for Brian Turner's program[1]. Wallers, backed by Rebel regular and latter-day Country Teasers bassist Sophie Politowicz, as well as Teasers Alastair MacKinven and Robert McNeill, covers material from most of the earlier Rebel releases as well as "Life Is a Rehearsal" from Secret Weapon Revealed at Last and a cover of the 1981 Siouxsie and the Banshees single, Arabian Knights.

The 12" record was released in two formats, one a standard black on white card stock cover and one a limited edition (150 copies) orange on white cover with an embossed velvet sleeve and a CD-R of the album.[2]
