North Gauteng High Court

North Gauteng High Court

The North Gauteng High Court (formerly the Transvaal Provincial Division) is a division of the High Court of South Africa. It has jurisdiction over:

  • All of Gauteng province, although jurisdiction over the southern districts is concurrent with the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.
  • The eastern parts of North West province; the western parts (including the former Bophuthatswana) fall under the North West High Court in Mafikeng.
  • Most of Limpopo province, except for the former Venda, which falls under the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou.
  • All of Mpumalanga province.

It is expected that, when the Superior Courts Bill is passed by Parliament, a new Mpumalanga High Court will be established in Nelspruit and the jurisdictions of the North West and Limpopo High Courts will be expanded, reducing the area of jurisdiction of the Pretoria court.
