The line was first opened in April 1924 as the Mitsui Electric Tramway (三井電気軌道 Mitsui Denki Kidō ) between Hiyoshi and Amagi Station. In June 1924 the line was absorbed into the Kyushu Railway system, becoming the Mitsui Line. From 9 November 1948, the line voltage was raised to 1,500 V DC, and from 23 November 1948, through-running commenced with the Tenjin Ōmuta Line. From 1 October 1989, wanman driver only operation commenced on the line.[1]
