Nina's Hair Parlour

Nina's Hair Parlour

Nina's Hair Parlour is the first and only UK specialist vintage hair and makeup salon[1][2] based in North London. The Parlour continues the tradition of hair parlours from the past, providing 50's updos, Marcel Waves, Kiss Curls and Pompadours. The Parlour was founded by Nina Butkovich-Budden, a Croatian national who has lived in London since 1993.[1] The makeup artist Issidora, a Serbian /British national, joined Nina in 2007 and together they opened the salon in Alfie's Antique Market thus providing everyone with the opportunity to achieve complete and genuine vintage look. The other staff within the Parlour include Leila Mauro, a Belgian national, specializing in up do's, Marcel/finger waves and Jayne Mansfield curls, Sami Knight specializing in extreme styles, wigs and postiche, drawing his inspiration from the 1980s 90's and Mr Mark McCarthy, a barber, specializing in rockabilly cuts.[3]

The Parlour

Nina's Hair Parlour started inside a small salon, Cut and Clipper, on The Cut, Waterloo. The Parlour's founder, Nina Butkovich-Budden soon attracted interest from the press[4] and the media and found she had outgrown the small space in South London leading to the move to Alfie's Antiques Market in Marylebone.

Nina's Hair Parlour re-opened its doors in June 2008. Salons interior is designed to emulate the salons of the 1950s with original chair mounted hairdryers, pistachio coloured walls and it is often hired for filming and photo shoots. It is also a home to a small hair and makeup museum, that includes a collection of original metal Marcel waving clips, 1920s-1950s hair driers, 1927 Rimmel mascara, 1942 Elizabeth Arden skin care box, never been used 1950's Palmolive shampoo and many other precious items of the last century.

The Founder

Nina Butkovich-Budden began cutting and styling with vintage and retro ideas in mind for her friends before founding Nina's Hair Parlour. She covers a wide range of styles from the Belle Epoch to the Swinging 60s. She dabbles extensively in the Avant Gardé and the theatrical nature of style as shown in her hair styling and millinery skills.

Nina has acted as a period style consultant for The Young Vic Theatre in Waterloo. She and Issidora designed hair and makeup for Ray Davies' musical Come Dancing[5] at Theatre Royal in London, Stella Artois Recyclage de Luxe Show,[6] video for Sing When You're In love single by The Enemy[7] to name a few.[8] They have worked with a range of photographers and stylists and their creations were published in leading fashion magazines such as Elle, Glamour, GQ Italy, InStyle etc. Their collaboration with Marko Mitanovski[9] has proven particularly successful. His London Fashion Week debut in 2009, The Lady Macbeth, was crowned by their "fawn" look. The antlers designed by Nina have been subsequently worn by the much celebrated singer Lady Gaga on her Monster Tour. The international fashion show Life Ball 2008/09 in Vienna saw Nina working with the celebrity hair stylist Danilo Dixon.[10] Together they created hair styles for the stars such as Pamela Anderson and Debbie Harry. They teamed up again for The Kylie Minogue Show, broadcast on the UK TV Channel ITV.

Nina has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour[11] talking about the Beehive and on segments in The Richard & Judy Show, ITV1s This Morning and various news programs. Nina, Issidora and the rest of their team appeared on the BBC's Children In Need show Celebrity Scissorhands alongside Lee Stafford and Steve Strange, as vintage hair and makeup experts , to help raise money for impoverished children.
