Nigel Yates

Professor Nigel Yates (1944 - 2009) was Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Wales, Lampeter. He was born in Swansea and died of cancer on 15 January 2009. ^[1] He was born in Swansea on 1 July 1944, educated at Belmont Abbey School and studied at the University of Hull.

Nigel was an archivist first in Carmarthen, then North Tyneside before becoming Head of Archives for Portsmouth City Council and finally for Kent County Council. While at Kent he published 'Buildings, Faith and Worship' in 1991. After taking early retirement in 1994 he moved to Blandford Forum, where he wrote 'Anglican Ritualism in Victorian Britain 1830-1910'.

In 2000 he became senior research fellow at the University of Wales, Lampeter and was appointed Professor of Ecclesiastical History in 2005. he also served as Director of Research at Lampeter.

Professor Yates died on 15 January 2009 and was survived by his wife Paula, four children, two grandchildren and great granddaughter. His final book, 'Love Now, Pay Later', was published posthumously.

His wife, Dr Paula Yates, also taught at Lampeter. Paula is currently the Dean of Non Residential Studies at St Michael's College, Cardiff.
