Sinclair Community College is a community college located in Dayton, Ohio, with satellite locations in three neighboring cities—Englewood, Huber Heights, and Mason. Sinclair’s service area includes various counties throughout Ohio. Although, the primary service district spans Montgomery and Warren counties.

Prior to the openings of its satellite locations, enrollment was 24,000 students, making the main campus one of the largest (by enrollment) community college campuses in North America. Because of special funding set up by the taxpayers of Montgomery County, the tuition of the college is the lowest in Ohio for residents of that county; the tuition necessary to complete an associate degree program can cost less than a single quarter’s tuition at other colleges.

Mission

Facilities

Until 2006, the main campus in downtown Dayton was the college’s only learning area, aside from some classes held in area high schools, YMCAs, and other facilities.

On May 8, 2006, the college held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the [http://www.sinclair.edu/about/ftc/englewood/index.cfm Englewood Learning Center] as a satellite location at the YMCA in Englewood, a northern suburb of Dayton. Later on September 22, 2006, the college held a similar ceremony for another satellite location, the [http://www.sinclair.edu/about/ftc/huberheights/index.cfm Huber Heights Learning Center] , also at a YMCA in the northern suburb Huber Heights, Ohio. Most recently, September 7, 2007 marked the grand opening for the [http://mason.sinclair.edu Courseview Campus Center] in Mason, Ohio.

Sinclair Community College is a purely commuter school and does not currently have any dorms or other forms of on-campus housing.

History

Sinclair Community College is named for David A. Sinclair, a Scottish immigrant and secretary of the Dayton YMCA (1874–1902), who founded the adult training school that eventually became Sinclair College in 1948.

The college's motto, “Find the Need and Endeavor to Meet It,” was created by Mr. Sinclair.

Under the leadership of Dr. David Ponitz, who served as president from 1975 to 1997, Sinclair became a model institution for community colleges by pioneering new approaches in technology and business curricula. The David H. Ponitz Sinclair Center (Building 12) is named after him.

Accreditation

Sinclair is fully accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. Sinclair is also a member of the Ohio Association of Colleges. Programs of study are approved by the Ohio Board of Regents. Sinclair is authorized to grant associate degrees in arts, sciences, applied science, and individualized and technical study.

Programs in mechanical engineering technology, quality engineering technology, packaging engineering technology, and electronics engineering technology are accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The Automotive Technology program is fully certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). Drafting & Design Technology is accredited by the National Association of Industrial Technology. All Allied Health Technologies programs are fully accredited by national and/or state approved accrediting organizations. The Paralegal Program is approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). Business accreditation is by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. Sinclair's Art and Design Programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and its Music program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Honors

Sinclair Community College has been recognized as an elite Vanguard Learning College by the League for Innovation in the Community College, an organization whose board of directors includes Sinclair's president. “Vanguard” is a term designated by the League for Innovation to recognize the top twelve two-year institutions in North America that are learner-centered, serving as incubators and catalysts for the “Learning College” concept by working to build on values that place learning first. “Learning College” is a culture consisting of an attitude that focuses constantly on student and learner access and success.
