New Oakland Child-Adolescent and Family Center is a private, comprehensive mental health facility founded by board-certified child psychiatrist Dr. Ismail B. Sendi. Serving the tri-county metro-Detroit area, New Oakland has been attending to the mental health and substance abuse needs of children, adolescents, adults and their families since 1990.[1] New Oakland focuses on providing quality based mental health care with a pro-active, preventive, and early intervention approach. The continuum of care at New Oakland includes mental health/substance abuse outpatient treatment, psychiatric evaluation with or without medication review and management, psychological testing/evaluation and FACE to FACE State Licensed Partial Hospitalization Program care.[2]Contents
History
In March 1990, Ismail B. Sendi MD, PC was formed by Dr. Ismail Sendi to provide a full range of traditional mental health outpatient services to the Oakland County, Michigan market.[3] By 1994, through acquisitions and internal growth, MDPC had grown to near 20 contractual and staff employees.[4]
In response to market demands and industry needs, the MDPC transitioned to expand its previous business model, creating its proprietary FACE to FACE Intensive Outpatient and FACE to FACE Psychiatric Partial Hospital Day Program services, establishing the first New Oakland Child-Adolescent and Family Center full service behavioral health care crisis center.[5] “New Oakland” was the chosen moniker as Dr. Sendi was determined to establish a “New,” modernistic central crisis “Center” in Oakland County that would offer comprehensive mental health treatment designed to assist “Children, Adolescents” and their entire “Families”.
In May 1996, New Oakland established a Wayne County, Michigan office sub-leasing space in a traditional outpatient facility in Westland, Michigan.[6] This unit was established in an effort to offer the FACE to FACE IOP and FACE to FACE PHP care to satisfy a regional need. In October 1997, New Oakland hired Kevin S. Sendi to be the Executive Vice-President in Charge of Operations.[7]
From late-1997 to 2000, the company experienced significant growth, doubling in revenue. Each year during the period the company gained significant exposure and was able to secure additional third party and managed care contracts. In 2000, New Oakland relocated the fixed service FACE to FACE IOP and PHP located in Westland to Livonia, Michigan. In the process, New Oakland was able to expand Western-Wayne County operations to a larger facility which allowed for provision of traditional outpatient mental health services as well. This allowed New Oakland to a provide full and complete range of behavioral healthcare services to much of Wayne County via its Livonia, MI facility.[8]
As the economy weakened beginning in 2001, management faced significant challenges as other mental health facilities were each forced to exit the market. Until 2001, New Oakland had direct competition in the Michigan market from a small number of other child-adolescent hospital based psychiatric PHP. By the end of 2003, although the market had contracted significantly, the company was able to assume a leading market share previously held by its competitors. In August 2003, New Oakland hired Martha Adair to direct Marketing and Business Development projects.[9] Shortly thereafter in October 2003, New Oakland expanded into Macomb County, Michigan offering a full service mental health facility in Clinton Township, Michigan.[10] In February, 2004, New Oakland hired Kimberly Smith to direct operations of their new Pharmaceutical Research division.[11]
In February 2005, New Oakland expanded and relocated Western-Wayne County operations to a premier, newly remodeled 10,000-square-foot (930 m2) facility in a more logistically convenient location in Livonia.[12] Similarly, in February 2008, New Oakland expanded and relocated Macomb County operations to a premier, newly remodeled 10,000-square-foot (930 m2) facility in a more appropriate location in Clinton Township, Michigan.[13] Finally, in January 2010, New Oakland expanded and relocated South Oakland County operations to a premier 5,000-square-foot (460 m2) facility in the heart of West Bloomfield, Michigan.[14] Today, New Oakland is a leading provider of behavioral healthcare services in metropolitan Detroit, offering consumers from each county a relatively close, convenient facility to meet all of their mental health and substance abuse treatment needs.
FACE to FACE State of Michigan Licensed Partial Hospital Program
In some families the conflict may be so severe and destructive that it prevents the family from growing and relating to one another in healthy ways. At these times, the aim of New Oakland is to help families through the identified crisi and provide them with the resources to recognize future conflicts before they reach the crisis stage.
New Oakland Child-Adolescent and Family Center's core programming model designed to address these debilitating times is the FACE to FACE State of Michigan Licensed Partial Hospital Program.[15] The FACE to FACE PHP is a 5-10 day program that helps children, adolescents, adults and families through challenging mental health related issues.[16] This short-term innovative program utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to assess, intervene and empower the family to work towards resolution of the presenting problem.[17] The therapeutic day milieu is the place where, through staff observation, psychiatric evaluation, individual, family, group and art therapy, the individual is challenged to develop new coping skills. Psychological testing is utilized when appropriate.[18]
