New Enterprise Council (Conservative Party, UK)

-
The New Enterprise Council is a Conservative Party (UK) group founded in 2008 to form a link between the party and business leaders. The Council advises the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne. [1]
Issues
A particular issue cited in the Council's founding were plans by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown to end taper relief on capital gains tax.
The Council is also seen as an attempt to strengthen the Conservative Party's relationship with industry, bringing it more into line with its links to the financial industry through the City Circle (Conservative Party, United Kingdom). [2]
Partisanship versus independence
Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the most prominent member council, stated: "I agreed to be included in the group of entrepreneurs because I was assured it will be non-partisan.. [there is] not much difference between left and right any more."" [3] However the youngest member the Dotcom founder James Murray-Wells is rumoured to be likely to starting a career as Conservative Member of Parliament shortly. [4][5]
Members
Members are generally seen as younger and more diverse in age, background, ethnicity and sex than the Labour Party's Business Council, possibly because of the emphasis on entrepeurs rather than representatives of large corporations. [6]
Members include [7]:
- Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou founder of easyJet
- Surinder Arora of Arora Hotels
- Stefan Glaenzer former executive chairman of LastFM
- James Murray-Wells founder of Glasses Direct
- Caroline Plumb CEO of Freshminds
- Sally Preston founder and managing director Babylicious
