The New Democratic Party (NDP) is a conservative political party in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The party is led by Arnhim Eustace,[1] and is currently the official opposition in the House of Assembly.

History

The party was established on 3 December 1975, and first contested national elections in 1979, when it received 27.4% of the vote and won two of the thirteen seats. In the 1984 elections the party received 51.4% of the vote and won nine of the thirteen seats. They remained in power after the 1989 elections, in which they won all fifteen seats. Further elections in 1994 and 1998 saw them retain a majority, despite the Unity Labour Party winning over 50% of the vote in 1998. In the 2001 elections the party was reduced to just three seats with the ULP winning twelve.[2] In the 2005 elections the party again won three seats.[3] In the 2010 elections, the party saw a rise in the popular vote, winning seven seats, but fell short of a majority.[4]

The NDP is a member of the Caribbean Democrat Union, the regional organisation of the International Democrat Union for centre-right political parties.[5]
