Aoife

Aoife

Aoife (IPA2|ˈiːfʲə) (pronounced EE-feh, or EE-fah, depending on where in Ireland) is an Irish female given name. The difference in pronunciation comes from the varied dialects of Ireland, the more anglicized Irish spoken in the East, and the stronger dialect in the West and the Gaeltacht. It is commonly regarded as an Irish language equivalent of the female given name Eve or Eva. However this is incorrect as the names have very different origins. Suggestions that "Aoife" means "radiant beauty" or is derived from the Irish word "aoibheann" (sweet) are likewise not supported by any philological evidence.
* Aoife (or Aife), is the name of several characters in Irish mythology.
* It is the name of the jealous stepmother in the Irish myth, "Children of Lir" .
* "Aoife" (1996) is the name of the second album by Aoife Ní Fhearraigh, an Irish singer.
* The LÉ Aoife (P22) is a Republic of Ireland naval vessel.
* Aoife of Leinster (Eva MacMurrough) (b. 1145, d. 1188), Irish Queen, daughter of Dermot MacMurrough and wife of Richard de Clare, better known as 'Strongbow'.
* AOIFE is acronym for Association of Institutions for Feminist Education and Research in Europe.
