History

The first Necronomicon was held in 1989[1]. The original vision for Necronomicon involved horror, darkness, angst and cathartic games. Necronomicon was created as "a mood-oriented Roleplaying Convention"[2] at a time when most convention games were hack and slash. In later years though it diverged from being a purely dark convention, adding an AD&D tournament and other mainstream role-playing games.

Short Sharp Shocks

Designers wrote Short Sharp Shocks by invitation only. This category was a chance to offer very scary or intense games that push boundaries (and which can consequently be disturbing, so they didn't recommend them for under-16s).

Convention

Necronomicon was generally run over three or four days (three before the move to Easter, four after), with registration usually on the night before the convention and prize giving in the afternoon of the last day. The convention was usually followed with a social gathering at a local bar in Newtown, New South Wales.
