National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) is a system being developed to identify and track livestock in New Zealand. The scheme is to be used for tracing the history of animals from farms to abattoirs using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology.
Federated Farmers, a farming lobby group, oppose the proposed system saying that it will impose extra costs on farmers and will not result in any benefits.[1] Farmers also fear that the NAIT will be used to impose a greenhouse gas emissions tax under an emissions trading scheme. A Federated Farmers survey found that 2% supported NAIT and 80% opposed it. A NAIT working group claimed that there would be on-farm benefits.[2]
Similar systems exist in other countries such as the National Animal Identification System in the United States, the British Cattle Movement Service and the National Livestock Identification System in Australia.
