logo of the British Cattle Movement Service] The British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) was established in the wake of the Bovine spongiform encephalopathy crisis in the UK, as of 2003 it is now a part of the Rural Payments Agency. All cattle in the UK must be ear tagged and have a cattle passport, which contains information about their movement history and genetic heritage. A central database works alongside the physical passport and records the births, deaths and movements of all cattle. Farmers interact with the service via the postal service using movement cards and passport applications or through the internet using the service [http://www.bcms.gov.uk CTS Online] .
