Nathaniel Havholm

Nathaniel Havholm is an American photographer who specializes in landscape photography and documentary photography. ^[1]

Biography

Early Life

Havholm was born May 26th, 1970 in Willimantic, Connecticut. His family moved to Wooster, Ohio later that year (1970) when my father was awarded a tenured position in the English Department at The College of Wooster. Since he was a child, he had a great affinity for photography.

He attended Beall Avenue Elementary, Edgewood Junior High, and Wooster High School. He continued his education at Guilford College. Havholm graduated with a BA in English.

Havholm began his career in New York City at MTV in 1993 and worked for Viacom as a “permalancer” until 1996.

While at MTV and Viacom, Havholm realized he could make a living taking photos inside the entertainment industry. He assisted cinematographers from 1996 until 2003. As an assistant, Havholm learned the principals of cinematography. In 2000, he left assisting union sitcoms to pursue a career as a photographer and cinematographer. The television and movie experience provided the means to continue the pursuit of photography.

Photography Work

Havholm uses Contax MR137, Fuji GSWIII 6X9, Canon 5D mkII, PS CS5 as his photographic tools. His favorite photographers are Gary Winogrand, Lee Fredlander, Robert Frank, Stephen Shore, William Eggleston, and Mitch Epstein. ^[2] According to Havholm, the photographer's natural world has provided him with most of his better selling images, but his urban work – shot primarily in documentary fashion – continues to fortify his portfolio.

Nominations

In 2004, Havholm was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the Discovery Channel series, "Deadliest Catch.” ^[3]
