It serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of Namiquipa.
In the 2005 INEGI Census, the municipality reported a total population of 20,314, of whom 1,718 lived in the municipal seat.[1]
The origin of the settlement is an indigenous village called Namiquipa, where, in 1763, Franciscan missionaries established a mission called San Pedro de Alcántara de Namiquipa. It was given town (villa) status in 1778.[1]
