American Division

The NHL's American Division was formed after expansion in 1926. The division existed for 12 seasons until 1938.

  • Boston Bruins
  • Chicago Blackhawks
  • Detroit Cougars
  • New York Rangers
  • Pittsburgh Pirates

Changes from 1925–1926 season

  • The NHL split into two divisions, the American and the Canadian
  • The Chicago Blackhawks (formerly the Portland Rosebuds) and the Detroit Cougars (formerly the Victoria Cougars) were admitted from the Western Hockey League
  • The New York Rangers were admitted as an expansion team

  • Boston Bruins

  • Detroit Falcons
  • New York Rangers
  • Philadelphia Quakers

Changes from 1930–1931 season

  • Detroit changed their nickname from the Cougars to the Falcons
  • The Pittsburgh Pirates moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to become the Philadelphia Quakers

  • New York Rangers

  • The Philadelphia Quakers folded due to financial problems

1933–1938

  • Detroit changed their nickname from the Falcons to the Red Wings

After the 1937–1938 season

The league collapsed into one single table, reverting to the format before the 1926–1927 season
