Location

The power station is located across River Muzizi, which forms the border between Hoima District and Ntoroko District, close to the southeastern shores of Lake Albert, in Western Uganda. This location lies approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 mi), by road, southwest of the town of Ndaiga in Hoima District. The power station is located approximately 290 kilometres (180 mi), by road, west of Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and the largest city in that country.[1] The coordinates of the power station are: 00 57 54N, 30 32 42E (Latitude:0.9650; Longitude:30.5450).[2]

Overview

As early as 1999, the site of the power station was identified by the government of Uganda as a potential mini-hydropower site. At the beginning, a 10 MW project was anticipated. More recently, the projected capacity of the project has been increased to 26 MW.[3] In December 2010, solicitation for bids for an Environmental Impact Study, power station design and cost estimation were advertised in the Ugandan media.[4]

History

The feasibility study and environmental impact study are expected to take one year and the bidding process for a contractor is expected to take another year. Construction is expected to start in 2013 and last four (4) years. Allowing for another year of construction delays, commissioning of the new power station is expected in 2018. It is anticipated that the power generated at this power station will enter the national grid at a new substation, close to the power station, along a new 132kV transmission line from Kaiso-Tonya to Fort Portal.

Construction costs

The full construction budget is still being worked out. In 2007, the construction for Muzizi Power Station was estimated at about US$30 million, for a 10 MW project.[5] Funding for the feasibility studies is funded by a grant from the German Development Bank (KfW), to the Government of Uganda.[6]
