Murder of Collector Connolly

Murder of Collector Connolly
The Conolly Teak Plot - 2 km from Nilambur Town. The plot was named in memory of H.V. Conolly, then Malabar District Collector

Murder of Collector Connolly refers to the murder of Lt Henry Valentine Connolly, District collector and magistrate of Malabar, British India at the Collector's residence at West Hill Bungalow, Calicut on 11 September 1855 by a Mappila trio as a part of the Mappila Outbreaks (1835–1922) in Malabar. The murderers, Valassery Emalu, Puliyankunnath Thenu (these two men were escaped from prison at Calicut a month ago) and Haiderman; a hairdresser, were shot dead by the government forces led by Major Halley and Captain Davis in an encounter after 6 days at large at Edavannappara in Thiruvambadi [1]. The Mappila rebels were using these escaped prisoners to murder H.V. Conolly who suggested the idea of exilation of Sayid Fasal Pookoya Thangal, the Mambrum Thangal, a famous religious leader[2].

H.V. Conolly is famous for his Canoly Canal and Conolly Teak Plot and was the elder brother of Arthur Conolly.
