Thangal

Thangal

Thangal, in Malayalam, is an honorific title that is given to males accepted as descendants of Sayyed family.

Sayyid (سيد) (plural Saadah) is an honorific title that is given to males accepted as descendants of the Islamic prophet Muhammad through his grandsons, Hasan ibn Ali and Husayn ibn Ali, who were the sons of his daughter Fatima Zahra and son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib.

The Thangals in Malabar region of Kerala who are emigrated from middle east during 16th and 17th century claimed themselves as descendents of prophet Muhammad and respected by the local Muslims accordingly.

It is still disputed Whether Thangals are descendents of the prophet or just a group of middle eastern emigrants. Some groups of Kerala Muslims still honor the family with great respect and loyalty and believe in their special powers.

Role in politics

Koyilandy Thangals and Panakkad Thangals have a great hold in Kerala Politics and still hold supreme post in Indian Union Muslim league, a Muslim political party concentrated mainly in Malabar region.
