History and origin
The Murao claim descent from the ancient Maurya dynasty.[citation needed] Murao or Maurya are the same as Koeri, Kushwaha, or Shakya in other parts of UP, Bihar, MP or North India with whom they intermarry.
Present circumstances
The community is mainly involved in the agriculture. While some are high and middle land-holding agricultrists, some families possess marginal land. Many persons of the community have come to hold political, administrative and police positions in recent times by dint of industriousness present in the community.
The Murao do not have a traditional caste, but do have members in the village panchayat.
They are Hindu community, and like other north Indian castes, are endogamous, and follow the principle of gotra exogamy.
