Munisense is an internet start-up based in Leiden, The Netherlands. It was founded by Hans Mulder and George Boersma in 2008. The company provides infrastructure services for wireless data acquisition, using a variety of sensors, and data analysis and presentation on the web. The services includes real-time[disambiguation needed ] and continuous flow of data, indefinite storage of the data, and analysis of the data. Next to that the system can also react to the analyzed data, by, for example, notifying the user if set limits are exceeded.

According to Munisense the service results in more effective use of natural resources, increased productivity, and overall greater well-being.[1]

Measuring the New Way

Measuring the New Way (Het Nieuwe Meten in Dutch) is a phrase coined by Munisense, to describe their advanced form of wireless data acquisition. The idea is made possible by three previously developed technologies: wireless sensor networks, the internet, and statistical analysis.[2] The combination of these technologies shapes new horizons for a variety of industries and organizations and is combined in the Munisense INSIGHTNOW™ service.[3]

INSIGHTNOW

INSIGHTNOW™ system is made of three components: the back-office, the portal, and wireless sensor networks.[4] All the data is stored in the back-office and can be accessed by the user through the portal. The wireless sensor networks are the measurement and actuation networks on location. INSIGHTNOW™ platform is based on ZigBee of which Munisense is an active member.[5]

Applications of the System

  • Managing noise around building sites, events, nightlife, traffic, etc.
  • Managing indoor climate quality, particularly CO2.
  • Energy use
  • Urban water management
  • Public lighting management
