Original two foot gauge railway

The railway was originally built in the colonial era, 1905, with a 600mm gauge, and was 249 km in length [2].

Regauging to Cape gauge

In 1950 the line was re-gauged to Cape gauge (1067mm).[3] severely damaged by years of civil war in Angola, but rehabilitation began in 2006 with support from China.[4] As of March 2009, 89 km had been restored, between Matala and Dongo.

In November 2010, it was announced that the reconstruction was being managed by RITES, and that it would have 56 stations.[5] There are plans to buy 9 new locomotives plus 54 passenger coaches from a Chinese manufacturer.[6]

The railway is expected to serve mines at Chamutete and Cassinga[7]
