May 31 ,1778 –November 21 ,1857 ) was aUnited States Senator fromVermont . He was the uncle ofOrigen S. Seymour and the great-uncle of his son Edward W. Seymour.He was born in
Litchfield, Connecticut on May 31, 1778. Seymour attended the common schools and graduated fromYale College in 1797. He taught school inCheshire, Connecticut and pursued legal studies inLitchfield Law School . He was admitted to the bar in 1800 and commenced the practice of law inMiddlebury, Vermont .From 1800 to 1809, he was postmaster of Middlebury. He was a member of the State executive council from 1809 to 1814; he was the State’s attorney for Addison County from 1810 to 1813 and from 1815 to 1819.
In 1821, running as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party, he was elected to the United States Senate and served from
March 4 ,1821 , toMarch 3 ,1833 . He did not run for re-election to the senate, but ran forGovernor of Vermont as a Whig in 1836, but lost.He was a judge of the probate court from 1847 to 1856. He died in
Middlebury, Vermont onNovember 21 ,1857 and is interned in that city's West Cemetery.References
