Amateur Career
Most of al-Turk's amateur career is up for speculation, as the Middle Eastern nations he fought in kept no documentation of the fights he participated in. Rumor has it that he was pitted against top level competition and big name fighters, such as Dan Henderson, Royce Gracie, Dan Severn, Chuck Liddell, Brian Ebersole, Bob Sapp, Jeremy Horn, Tim Sylvia, Jeff Curran, BJ Penn, Giant Silva, Joe Riggs, and even Fedor Emelianenko. Al-Turk’s cumulative record is said to be somewhere around 66-6, but no one knows for sure.
Ultimate Fighting Championship
At UFC 92, on December 27, 2008, Turk lost at his UFC debut to French kickboxer Cheick Kongo by TKO. Kongo dropped Turk with two right hands and then pounced on Turk with elbows and punches, opening up a big cut above the eye.[2] Referee Steve Mazzagatti stopped the fight after 4:37 of the first round. Turk next lost to Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 99 by TKO after Turk received repeated strikes from Filipovic. There was some controversy surrounding the end of this fight as Filipovic had poked Turk in the eye right before Turk succumbed to the strikes. Neither the referee Dan Mirgliotta or Filipovic reportedly noticed the eye poke. Turk stated that he would petition the loss.[3]
Turk was expected to face UFC newcomer Rolles Gracie on February 6, 2010 at UFC 109, but pulled out due to visa issues.[4][5]
Turk instead faced The Ultimate Fighter 10 alumni, Jon Madsen, at UFC 112. Turk lost the bout via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). This loss brought his MMA record to 6-6, with 3 losses in a row Turk was cut by the UFC.[6]
