This collection groups together the artists of India most valued by auction houses, by critics, and by private collectors. On an average their paintings would sell for over $500,000.
This list is not exhaustive as every day[citation needed] brings a new artist breaching old records in price.
Artists
- S. H. Raza became India's costliest modern artist on June 10, 2010 when the painting titled 'Saurashtra' by sold for $3,486,965 at a Christie's auction. Syed Haider Raza (born 22 February 1922) is a famous Indian artist who has lived and worked in France since 1950, but maintains strong ties with India. His works are mainly abstracts in oil or acrylic, with a very rich use of color. Raza uses Indian icons in his paintings. He was awarded the Padma Shri and Fellowship of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1981 and Padma Bhushan in 2007.[1]
- Tyeb Mehta lived from 25 July 1925 to 2 July 2009. In 2002 one of his paintings sold at a Christie’s auction which was not only the highest sum for an Indian painting at an international auction at that time, but also triggered the subsequent great Indian art boom.[2]
- John Wilkins (1927–1991), was an Indian artist born on June 20, 1927 at Kolar Gold Fields. Some of his works have been rated in the league of the greatest by art critics. His paintings valued highly are in the collection of select art collectors, business houses and Government institutions. Famous works include ‘Gossip’, ‘Sneha- village belle, ‘Market Seller’.[3]
- F N Souza (April 12, 1924 - March 28, 2002), commonly referred to as F.N. Souza, was an Indian artist, a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay, and the first post-independence Indian artist to achieve high recognition in the West. A work by Francis Newton Souza titled ‘Birth’ had held the record for the most expensive piece of modern art by earning $2.5 million in 2007.[4]
- Vasudeo S. Gaitonde (1924–2001) had a reputation as India's foremost abstract artist. He received Padma Shri Award in 1971. V.S. Gaitonde was the first Indian contemporary painter whose work was sold for $ 197,698 at the Osians art auction. Gaitonde died in 2002.[5]
- Amrita Sher-Gil (January 30, 1913 – December 5, 1941), was an eminent Indian painter, today considered an important women painter of 20th-century India, whose legacy stands on a par with that of the Masters of Bengal Renaissance; she is also the "most expensive" woman painter of India's ‘Village Scene’[6]
- Subodh Gupta (born in 1964), an artist based in New Delhi, was born in Khagaul, Patna. A sculpture by contemporary artist Subodh Gupta using brass and stainless steel utensils fetched USD 80,000, the second-highest price at a Christie's auction.[7]
- Maqbool Fida Husain, (born September 17, 1915, Pandharpur, Maharashtra, India) popularly known as MF Husain, as of 2011[update] works based in Qatar. He started his career as a billboard-painter. As of 2011[update] his paintings average at least 2 million dollars at an auction or private sale. After there was some controversy regarding his paintings in his home country, he was on a self-imposed exile from 2006. In January, 2010 he was offered citizenship of Qatar, which he accepted.[8]
