Moses Mathews

Moses Mathews

Moses Mathews (1725–1806)[1] was an American gunsmith. He is a notable figure of the American Revolution.

Mathews was born in Halifax County, Virginia. He supplied the Continental Army guns and was granted hundreds of acres by George Washington. In his will he mentioned the freeing of all of his slaves. This may be why there are African-Americans with the last name Mathews. He is the ninth great-grandson of Sir David ap Mathew.

He married Sarah Findley in 1748. His children were:

  • Sally (1753-abt 1820)
  • James
  • Phillip
  • William (1760-1847)
  • John

He became one of the wealthiest men in Georgia[2] He died in Wilkes/Lincoln County, Georgia, USA.
