Morayur

Morayur (Malayalam: മൊറയൂ൪) is a Revenue Village and Gram panchayat in Malappuram district, Kerala, India. Morayur is situated 15.8 kilometres (9.8 mi) north of Malappuram, on NH 213 between Kozhikode and Palakkad. It is close to Nilambur.

Morayur, in Malayalam, means 'Land of peoples who have manners'.

History

Thinayancherry Elayath, a native of Morayur, was a minister of one of the Zamorin kings. A Muslim family named 'Kodithodika' was a major family in the early history of Morayur. During the British Raj, it was common practice to appoint 'Adhikaries' (the present day Village Officer) from major families with inheritance rights, so the post was held by the Kodithodika family in Morayur. They continued to hold the post after Independence (1947) up to 1961. The first president of the Gram panchayat was Kodithodika Ahmed, alias Bappu, who served from 1969 to 1995.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Morayur had a population of 29,369, with 14,644 males and 14,725 females.[1]
