Monroe Middle School is located in San Jose, California and is part of the Campbell Union School District. Monroe is a California Distinguished School.

History

Monroe opened as an elementary school in the early 1960s. The "common dress" uniform vote occurred in 2007, and passed: students wear a uniform. A complete remodel, including the addition of a 2-story science-, library- and tech-building, and an event center, was completed in 2009 using Bond Measure "H" funds.

Activities

Sports

Monroe has a total of six different after-school sports: Basketball, Soccer, Wrestling, Volleyball, Track and Field, and Cross Country. The Mavericks are in the West Valley Athletic League with nine other schools.

  • 2010 Heidy Robledo set a new school record in the half mile run. She ran 3:00 in the track unit. The old record was 3:06 in 1998.

Bands

Mr. Ari Brown is the Music Director, and teaches Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Jazz Bands. Mr. Brown has been a musician since the age of 5 and holds degrees in Trumpet Performance, Jazz Studies, and Music Education from the University of Illinois. He is a student of Ray Sasaki, Tom Wirtel, David Miller, and Tim Farrell.[2] Born near Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Brown moved to San Jose in 2007 to become the Director of music at MMS. In Spring 2009, the Advanced Band earned the highest rating of "Superior" at the CMEA Festival (California Music Educator's Association).[3]

Musicals

Once a year, auditions are held for the school musical, which occurs in either the fall, winter, or spring of the school year. Past shows have included Aladdin, Grease, Into the Woods, Jr., Mulan, Jr., and Annie, Jr.
