Mon Sheong Foundation is a charity founded in Toronto in 1964 to help the Chinese community of Toronto's Chinatown. The founders of the foundation were the late Dr. Sim Fai Liu and Reverend Ron Con.
Initially started to provide help for the elderly and promote Chinese cultural awareness, it has grown into a larger charitable organization helping Chinese in the Greater Toronto Area. There was a concern that facilities at the time could not provide services to seniors who did not speak or understand English.
The foundations mission includes:
- providing quality care services for seniors at three facilities (Toronto, Scarborough and Richmond Hill) with a total of 457 beds
- Chinese school to promote awareness of Chinese culture and language in the Chinese community and to others interested in learning; 3 locations with hundreds of students; operating since 1968
- Youth groups to promote community involvement via volunteer work
- Adult day programs for seniors not in facilities and provide them a meaningful and safe place
to interact with other seniors
Funding for programs are provided by donations from the community and provincial grants.
MSF seniors facilities is now in some degree of competition for donations and support by the larger Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, which are more inclusive in accepting residents outside of the Chinese community in Toronto.
