Forming the Band
It all started with Natalia Tena and Sam Apley meeting in another band. They clicked and decided to make their own kind of music. Whilst being totally sleep deprived and festival fuelled after a week of dancing and having it off at The Secret Garden Party, as Nat describes it, they were busking to the last people standing. Someone from the Chai Wallah crue asked them what they were called so Sam baptized the band Molotov Jukebox. Afterwards they started finding the rest of its members and thus the band was born!

Musical style
Because they didn’t want to stick to just one genre they decided to blend all the genres and styles they like. It started out with gypsy and dubstep. In the meanwhile calypso, funk, ska, flamenco, samba, house, electro, pop, reggae and soul have joined the party. Given that it’s a mouthful they decided to give their personal style a name of its own. Considering all of their songs have a ground of traditional gypsy sound and a ‘dirty beat’ on them the name Gypstep came into the world.
Past years
The year 2010
After playing at a bunch of London festivals in 2010 such as Glastonbury and Green Man their first single “Laid to Rest” was released on the 15th of November. In December that year they went on an unplanned tour in Brazil, playing lots of last-minute gigs for a month.
The year 2011
This was a very productive year for them considering they spent a lot of time working on their first EP. On the 20th of June it was released under the name “Double Dare”. That summer they played at a lot of festivals such as The Secret Garden Party, Shoreditch Festival, Thames Festival and Glastonbury. This definitely got them noticed and they were asked to perform at Beirut’s Official Afterparty and to support The Kooks in Milan and Berlin. All of this has lead them to being nominated for ‘The Best Breakthrough Artist at the UK Festival Awards’ alongside Jessie J, XX and Ed Sheeran.
Future
Currently they are planning on doing another tour in Brazil in January. They’re also hoping on being able to do a European tour, another one in the UK and a lot of festivals during the summer of 2012. Their second single ‘Get Ready’ is coming out on the 14th of November and they’re also working on their next EP!
