Milk Can Game (high school football)

The Milk Can Game is a well-known annual football game held between North Hunterdon High School and Voorhees High School, two public high schools in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The game is always the last of the season and usually takes place right before Thanksgiving. After the conclusion of the game, a gold colored milk can is awarded to the winner. This school receives bragging rights and ownership of the can until the next year's game.

History

The Milk Can idea came from the first superintendent of the North Hunterdon District, G. Clifford Singley, to represent the original farming heritage of the community. The Golden Milk Can came from the farm of Bert and Emma Milligan in Union Township in 1975, donated by the family. It’s painted in 18-carat gold paint with the common color of the two schools, a gold stripe in the middle of the lid, with green and cardinal stripes on either side, and it reads “North Hunt. District Champs” on the top of the can with the score of each year’s game on the sides, all 35 of them.

Games

Through the 2010 game, the record is set at 23-11-1 in favor of North Hunterdon.[1] North won the first game in 1976 with a score of 31-8. The following year, Voorhees was victorious with a score of 13-12.

The 35th Milk Can Game was held on Friday, November 20, 2010, at North Hunterdon High School, with North Hunterdon winning 23-3.

The most lopsided game in the history of the Milk Can was in 1995, when Voorhees trumped North Hunterdon, winning 62-14. Voorhees won the Central Jersey Group 3 state playoff title that same year.
