Early life
Thompson is a third generation Oklahoman born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated from Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City and went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Oklahoma City University. He later went on to complete his Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma. Thompson married his wife, Hayley, in 2000. The two first met in the 8th grade and now have two children, Mitchell and Madelynn. They attend St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.[3]
Political career
Thompson was first elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 2004 without a runoff and over sixty-nine percent of the vote in the general election. He was reelected without opposition in 2006 and by a large margin in 2008. In the legislature, he has served as the Chairman of the House Transportation Subcommittee from 2007–2008 and Chairman of the Energy and Utility Regulation Committee from 2009-2010.[4][5]
In the Oklahoma House, Thompson has charted a mostly Republican record while breaking from Republican leadership in opposing tax increases and some Oklahoma budget agreements.[6] Thompson was the House author of Senate Joint Resolution 59, which will put a constitutional amendment on the Oklahoma ballot to attempt to exempt Oklahoma citizens from the Federal Government's health care legislation.[7]
Congressional Campaign
In April, 2009 Thompson launched his campaign for Oklahoma's Fifth Congressional District, being vacated by Mary Fallin who is running for Governor of Oklahoma. Shortly after his announcement, Thompson released his campaign co-chairman; Larry Nichols, Chairman of Devon Energy, David Rainbolt, CEO of BancFirst, and Tim Duit, President of TTK Construction. Thompson later released the endorsements of former Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick, Retired Major General Rita Aragon, Oklahoma City Thunder Owner Clay Bennett, University of Central Oklahoma President Roger Webb, and a majority of Republicans in Oklahoma's House of Representatives.
Public polling shows Thompson in second place, behind former candidate Kevin Calvey and ahead of former Falls Creek Director James Lankford, although all candidates remain relatively unknown with a large percentage of undecided voters.
In his Congressional campaign, Thompson has highlighted his legislation opposing the Federal Government's health care mandate, his support of pro-life causes and his opposition to Federal Government spending.
During Thompson's tenure in the Legislature, he has fought for tax cuts and called for budget reforms. Thompson has advocated for a comprehensive energy policy that would call for renewable energy sources, like wind energy and nuclear power, while also expanding exploration for oil and natural gas reserves in Oklahoma.
Currently, Thompson chairs the House Energy and Utility Regulation Committee. As chair, he oversees state regulation of Oklahoma's industries. Thompson is also a member of the General Government and Transportation and Rules Committees and is part of the House Leadership Team, serving as Deputy Republican Whip.[8]
