Mike McCready is an entrepreneur in the music industry, CEO of Music Xray, a blogger on Huffington Post[1] and musician.[2] He is most known for having pioneered the science of hit song prediction using acoustic analysis software to analyze the underlying mathematical patterns in music. As co-founder and CEO of Polyphonic HMI (later Music Intelligence Solutions and now Uplaya.com) he made worldwide news for having predicted the breakout success of Norah Jones before she was on anyone's radar and later that of Maroon 5.[3][4][5] The challenges his company faced in bringing the technology to market were later documented in a Harvard Business School case study titled Polyphonic HMI: Mixing Music and Math.[6]
A native of rural Nebraska, McCready moved to Barcelona, Spain, where he became a fixture in the local media in the early 90's for starting a company called WEI that made wristwatches and public clocks that reflect the time the way it is read in Catalan.[7] As a result, several prominent public clocks in the Barcelona region now display the Catalan time.[8] A number of local celebrities joined McCready's company by designing their own versions of the clock face which WEI sold as limited editions.[9][10][11] Some of the participating celebrities included current FC Barcelona trainer Josep Guardiola, comic group El Tricicle, and famous artist Joan Brossa, who also designed the company's logo.[12][13]
In the late 90's McCready fronted a blues band that was signed to independent label DiscMedi but the group disbanded and McCready was signed as a solo artist. His one album, which he sang in Catalan, garnered him two hit singles in 1999.[citation needed]
Today Mike McCready splits his time between New York's Tribeca neighborhood and Barcelona and leads a venture-backed start-up called Music Xray, which connects burgeoning artists with music industry professionals and uses technology to help predict which artists and songs are likely to succeed. The company has been featured in the media and in 2007 McCready was interviewed by Malcolm Gladwell in a public forum put on by The New Yorker Magazine.[14] Is making millions from unsuspecting artiste's
