A native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Jones was a three-sport star for Warren Harding High School.[1] He attended the University of Michigan on a football and baseball scholarship.[1] He played college football for the 1985 Michigan Wolverines football team as a backup quarterback behind Jim Harbaugh.[2] With Harbaugh securely entrenched in the starting quarterback spot at Michigan, Jones transferred to a junior college after one year at Michigan.[1] He later played college football at the tight end position for the Texas A&M Aggies football team from 1988 to 1989. He played professional football as a tight end for the Minnesota Vikings from 1990 to 1991 and for the Seattle Seahawks in 1992.[3]
