Early career
After being Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army in 1975, Miguel Fernandez founded Group Tech Systems, Inc., a US national database of group health insurance information. In 1985 founded Comprehensive Benefit Administrators, Inc. a third party administrator of health benefits which was sold in 1990 to Ramsay HMO a public company. He served as Executive Vice President of Ramsay Health maintenance organization (HMO), Inc. from 1990 to 1992.
Healthcare investments
In 1992, Miguel Fernandez was the founder and CEO of Physicians Healthcare Plans, Inc., an HMO based in Florida that was later sold in January 2003 to Amerigroup Corporation (NYSE: AGP) for $178 million ($121 million purchase price and $57 million cash).
In 2002, Miguel Fernandez was founder and CEO of CarePlus Health Plans, Inc, a Medicare Advantage HMO with 50,000 members. In December 2004 CarePlus Health Plans was sold to Humana (NYSE: HUM) for $408 million.
Current business
Since 1995, he has been a member of the board of directors of Mednax, Inc. (NYSE: MD) a National Medical Group.
He is the founder and Chairman of the Board of MBF Healthcare Partners, L.P. a private equity firm that focuses on investments in healthcare and health and wellness companies
Other interests
Serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Miami
Owns Little River Plantation in Florida, with timber and cattle interests

Philanthropic involvement includes:
- Miami Children’s Hospital – Miami, Florida - $5 million gift for Hospital Trauma Center
- Xavier High School – New York City - $5 million gift for high-tech auditorium and theater
- St. Thomas University – Miami, Florida – $3 million gift to establish leadership program
- Belen Jesuit High School – Miami, Florida
