Midnight Mutants (radio)

The Midnight Mutants radio show is a webcast/cable radio program that airs Monday nights (8PST/11EST)on WEBR Fairfax FCAC.org/Comcast 27/Cox Cable 37/WRLD International Channel 30/ Digital Cable 37/Basic D.C. area cable 7, and Radiotime.com.

The origin of the radio program dates back to the fall of 2001. The radio show was never intended to be a music show, although it did begin that way in the January 2003. It was conceived as a comedy/talk show in the vein of the 1990s Ottawa-based Tom Green hosted Midnight Caller. It later was fashioned more so after traditional FM radio talk shows such as Opie & Anthony, Ron & Fez and The Howard Stern Show.

Beginnings (January 2003 - June 2003)

The beginning of the Midnight Mutants'' radio show was that of a humble one. On January 11, 2003, Adam C Adam Chaffin, Nate D O Double G (Nate Powers), and Maytag (T.J. Neece) began broadcasting the Midnight Mutants radio show throughout Eastern Ky, SouthWestern Va, Southern West Va, Eastern Tn, and NorthEastern NC, on the WMMT. The original show aired from 11 pm – 1:30 am (but soon changed from 11 pm – 1:00 am). During the show listeners would hear brand new music, mutant picks, small chatter among the cast members and take phone calls. The show originally featured Host/Creator/Producer Adam C leading the show in topically conversation and dialog, Maytag, adding in great knowledge on pop cultural matters, and Nate D O DOUBLE G running the board and chiming in on occasion. VOG,(Jordan Owens) came aboard during the 2nd broadcast as the lovable yet hateful being who would unleash his hatred with a tirade of slurs and derogatory comments upon those that gave him attitude with his segment and fan favorite, VOG's Advice. During the first few months of the show the crew was gaining experience with this new media because only Adam C had had any prior radio experience and it was limited experience at that. Many segments grew during this initial phase of the show, such as VOG's Advice, crazy calls, and the Mutant 13 (later reduced down to the Mutant 9). Also during this phase of the show the mutants came to know many of the recurring callers including Drunk Animal Willie, Zack M, Masty, Talitha, Ryan from Nora, Wishney & Jessica Andrews.

Early middle (July 2003 - Sept 2003)

Changes began to take place in the summer of 2003 as Nate D O Double G left the show, mutant friend Kiser,(Josh Kiser) and the Scorpion,(Ryan Neece) joined the cast and several mutant friends dropped by the studio such as Spanky, impersonator Daniel Stanley, Dan the H man, Talitha from D.C., Stacie, Jamie (Britney's biggest fan), Sarah (the banshee), and many more. Also during this period the mutants began to develop more topical conversation and had several "themed" shows such as the Pissed-Off show, the 80's trilogy, VMA show, summer movie shows, etc. At this time the mutants faced a difficult task due to several of the mutants working and managing at the local theatre and the long commute to Kentucky. Thus the mutants took their show to the closest radio station to them in Wise, Va, at 106.3 WNVA.

Controversy at 106.3 WNVA (Sept 2003 - October 2003)

On WNVA the mutants switched to Friday nights 11 pm – 1 am due to another radio show, the Buzz, being broadcast on Saturdays. Things started off rough at WNVA, due to the stations older equipment that the mutants were not used to operating, and a phone system that did not work correctly. Also a radio war started up, while during the very first mutant call, a fan dissed WNVA's "other show" the Buzz, and a member from the Buzz called in and believed that the mutants had staged the phone call. The very next night the Buzz went on their own show and began bashing the Midnight Mutants. The Mutants continued to try and broadcast an entertaining show, but the equipment, phone system, and station itself were not helping in doing so. One night while Adam C & VOG were still at their jobs, and Kiser & Maytag were holding the show down until their arrival, 2 members of the Buzz came into the station drunk and began trying to take over the show. By the time Adam & VOG had arrived the 2 goons were gone. After that event the show continued to go downhill as the mutants had one of their most successful shows at WNVA. The 'genre show', in which everyone (even Nate D O Double G, and Spanky joined) discussed their favorite films from each genre, but that success was short lived as several members of the Buzz told the program director that the mutants were glorifying violence, and hatred towards women. Thus led to the suspension of the Midnight Mutants, and ultimately making the mutants realize that they needed to go back to 88.7 WMMT. Although the short time spent at WNVA was full of controversy, a few characters joined us into our move back to WMMT, such as new regular cast member Jake (Jake Johnston), semi-regular PST (Psycho Stalker Teri), and guest Soy (Jessica Browning).

Starting over (November 2003 - October 2004)

At this point Midnight Mutants were now fully charged and ready to bring entertainment back to where they got their start. Even though they were only away from WMMT for 7 weeks many listeners had gone away and it took a while before they would return, they did return however, this time with friends.
In this new venture the mutants were back but different than before, the subject matter began to get increasing more topical and a bit more controversial and the mutants began taking more phone calls as well. They also began receiving phone calls from up & coming artist as well such as Sony Recording artist, Ross Copperman. They also developed several new segments such as Maytag's Mind-boggler, Kiser's Personal Poems, and song parodies, while keeping classic and fan favorites like Crazy Calls & VOG's Advice. The mutants fell into controversy again one night when Drunk Animal Willie called in and began calling several of the mutants faggots, the mutants did not back down and unloaded several names upon him as well. This resulted in the mutants being banned from using certain letters and phrases. During the Spring phase of the radio program the mutants, along with a few friend musicians (Jerrod, Justin, and Drew) wrote, sang, and recorded the comedy album Perhaps...Indeed (one of the mutants catchphrases). The album had 14 tracks total. 4 parodies, 6 original songs, 1 sketch, and 3 VOG's Advice. The album was inexpensive to produce and sold modestly well at a local CD store, movie theatre in which the mutants worked, and out of their cars. After 22 months on-air and over 90 radio broadcasts the Midnight Mutants ended its run at 88.7 WMMT on October 10, 2004. The show was one of the most popular radio shows to be broadcast on 88.7 WMMT often placing near the top of the ratings with thousands of listeners each week.

Time Off (November 2004 - December 2005)

During this time there were no new broadcasts of the Midnight Mutants radio show, although Adam & Jake did begin to play songs from the comedy album and newer songs in and around Lexington, Ky, Johnson City, Tn, and Washington D.C. The time off from the show was due to the relocation of 2 of the main mutants, and an ending of several members of the mutants friendship.

Replay Days (January 2006 - June 2006)

Replays began to air on WEBR Fairfax in January 2006 at Fridays at midnight. The shows were edited down 'best of's' of the original broadcasts. They continued to run until June 2006 being modestly popular in the Washington D.C. market.

Present show (July 2006 - Present)

The new Midnight Mutants radio show began July 4, 2006. After being off the air LIVE for 19 months 2 of the mutants were dying to get back on-air and make up for lost time. The mutants had grown more mature in their broadcasting skills and were no longer the "kids" trying to do a radio show. Their conversations were more mature, even though very silly and crazy at times, but something had changed for them. During the time off Adam & Jake knew that the show was much more than a Saturday night hobby, it was a springboard into something more and the future was giving them this chance to do something real with it. Adam's best friend Talitha also joined the cast when Jake was unable to make the long commute to the show. Talitha having no background in broadcasting made a nice smooth transition to co-host position that was once held by the likes of Maytag, VOG and Kiser. The Midnight Mutants have also developed many more segments and features into the newest show such as Beating of the Week, Freaky Phobia, Guess the Scene, Mutant Madlib, Talitha the Groupie, Classic Mutant Moments, and of course, replays of VOG's Advice. Several past crew members & friends of the original Midnight Mutants radio Show have called in as well including the Scorpion, Maytag, Kiser, Wishney, Dan Stanley and PST. Although the show does not have the listening audience it once did, there is a very loyal fan base dedicated to the show. The shows are tighter and production value is much better due to more & better technology. The entire show seems to have something that the original show lacked, a true focused voice. Controversial topics are no longer shunned upon and almost anything and everything is covered on the new show (celebrity news, world events, etc.). The new show continues to grow each week and is increasing in listeners every week as well. Podcasts has also become a huge way for the show to grab an even bigger audience, in fact, more people listen to the show on podcast than live. Podcast for the show can be downloaded at www.GCast.com/u/MidnightMutants. Also several current and classic segments and bits can be heard on Myspace.com/MutantsRadio. As of December 2007, the Midnight Mutants entered a partnership with DeluxeUK airing a more music oriented version of the show, but it was a short-lived union, ending in March 2008, due to creative differences.
