Michael Sean Winters is an American journalist and writer who covers events in the Roman Catholic Church for the National Catholic Reporter, where his blog "Distinctly Catholic" can be found. With his colleagues Paul Moses and Joshua McElwee, Winters received the first place 2011 award for "Best In-Depth News/Special Reporting" from the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada. He is currently a visiting fellow at Catholic University's Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies.
Winters is the author of Left At the Altar: How Democrats Lost The Catholics And How Catholics Can Save The Democrats. He also writes for the The Tablet, an international Catholic news magazine published in the UK. He has often written from the perspective of progressive Christianity, opposing various conservative elements within the Catholic Church on topics such as the politics of abortion or the ordination of gay priests. His biography of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, God's Right Hand: How Jerry Falwell Made God a Republican and Baptized the American Right will be published by Harper One in January 2012.
