Playing career
In the summer of 2005, the Pittsburgh Penguins used their second pick of the NHL Entry Draft to draft Gergen sixty-first overall. Two months later, Gergen joined the NCAA's University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Gergen skated 153 games for the Bulldogs from 2005 until 2009, scoring 34 goals and 35 assists. Gergen was a three-time member of the WCHA All-Academic Team and a WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient in 2007-08.[1]
On May 13, 2009, Gergen signed with the Salzburg Red Bulls for the 2009-10 Erste Bank Eishockey Liga season.[3] He scored 11 points in 45 games.
Gergen started the 2010-11 season with the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL. He was released from the team on December 19, 2010[4]. On December 27, 2010, the Bakersfield Condors announced they had signed Gergen to a contract[2]
