Euro-Cup

Euro-Cup

The Euro-Cup is a Group 3 flat horse race in Germany which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Frankfurt over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September.

The event was formerly known as the Team Trophy der Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken. The 1988 edition was classed at Group 3 level, and it was contested over 2,200 metres. It was promoted to Group 2 status in 1989. Its distance was cut to 2,100 metres in 1990, and to 2,000 metres in 1991.

For a period the title of the race was frequently changed. Names included the Made in Europe-Trophy (1995–96) and the Flughafen Frankfurt-Trophy (1997–98). For the next two years, when it was known as the Henninger-Trophy (1999) and the Arthur Andersen Euro-Cup (2000), its distance was increased slightly to 2,050 metres. There was no comparable event at Frankfurt in 2001 – it was replaced by the Preis des Bankhaus Sal. Oppenheim, which was run at Cologne over 1,850 metres.

The race returned to Frankfurt with its present distance, 2,000 metres, in 2002. It was downgraded to Group 3 level in 2007.
