Medaid4kids is an Irish Charity founded in the early 1990s that specialises in donating medical equipment and supplies to hospitals and orphanges internationally. The charity ships mediacal equipment that becomes surplus to requirements in hospitals from Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to hospitals worldwide. Medaid4kids established an international donation programme so that medical equipment is no longer destroyed when its use in Irish hospitals has elapsed.[1]
Equipment donated covers the entire medical sphere including life support machines, incubators, ECG monitors.Since 2003 the charity has donated €15,000,000 in medical supplies globally, and runs ongoing medical programmes in eastern Europe, concentrating heavily in Transnistria in recent years.
The charity's website states that it is a non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian, organisation.
Contents
Europe
The European countries assisted include Moldova, Transnistria, Romania, Kosova, Albania, Macedonia, Ukraine, and Abkhazia.[2]. Transnistria has received over €12 miilion in medical supplies over a seven year period involving fourteen shipping containers weighing 300 toones in total.
Asia
The charity sends medical supplies and equipment to India, Pakistan, Philippines,[3][4]
Africa
The charity has donated medical equipment and supplies to Kenya Uganda, Zambia, Zaire, Angola and Libya in 2011 .[5] [6]
Middle East
The government of Palestine has received equipment from the charity delivered to its embassy in Dublin, Yassar Arafat give an invitation to a meeting with him. It was not acted upon and no member of Medaid4kids visited Palestine.
Orphanges
MedAid4Kids also supplies playgrounds, building supplies and hygiene supplies orphanages in Eastern Europe. Its programme in Transnistria supplies the entire hygiene programme for 8 state orphanages coving 2,500 children.
Management
The chairman of the charity is Ray Jordan who chairs a twelve person committee. Former chairmen include the charity's founders Des Grant and Robert Jones. The charity is supported by Staff Services from the UK's health services.[7] It has received coverage in the international media including the BBC.[8]
Sponsers and Supporters
The charity has been strongly supported by Riverdance. In June 30th 2011 Riverdance donated the proceeds from the opening night of their Dublin show to the charity. [9] Various celebrities have attended the charity's fundraisers including snooker player Ken Doherty and several international sports people.
Awards and Recognition
Several international governments have presented honours and awards to the charity including Transnistria Pakistan Abkhazia Russia.
