McKool Smith, PC is a law firm based in Dallas, Texas founded in 1991 by attorneys Mike McKool and Phil Smith. The 125-lawyer firm has become notable primarily because of major patent lawsuit verdicts won against Microsoft Corporation.[1][2][3]

Notable cases
- i4i v. Microsoft: McKool Smith represents the plaintiff, i4i, in ongoing patent infringement actions against Microsoft. A jury in the Eastern District of Texas awarded i4i $290 million, which included an injunction against sales of Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007 versions. Microsoft appealed the judgment and lost.[4][5]
- VirnetX v. Microsoft: McKool Smith represented the plaintiff, VirnetX, in patent infringement actions against Microsoft. The first action resulted in an award of $105 million for VirnetX with a subsequent action filed. In May 2010 Microsoft settled all actions for $200 million.[6]
Recognition
In 2010, Managing Intellectual Property magazine recognized McKool Smith as one of the top four patent litigation firms in the United States.[7]
