History
In 2006, Rabbi Sholom Tendler resigned from his positions as Hebrew principal of Yeshiva University High Schools of Los Angeles (YULA) and as rabbi of Young Israel of North Beverly Hills. He left in order to create a high school for the ultra-orthodox Jewish community in Los Angeles that would also have a serious academic curriculum.[3]
The school is named for Tendler's father, Rabbi Yitzchok Tendler.[3]
The school opened in September 2006 and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
Educational philosophy and curriculum
The school teaches a dual curriculum of Judaic studies and secular studies. The school states that its primary educational emphasis is to produce students proficient in Torah study both skills and knowledge, and who value Jewish ethics and character traits. As such, religious studies are given primacy relative to the curriculum of secular education taught in the school.
Student body
The school has a student body of approximately seventy boys from various areas of Los Angeles, the majority of them live in the Pico-Robertson, Fairfax District and San Fernando Valley areas. The school also has a dorming option, in which students from out of the Los Angeles area stay in an apartment with a dorm counselor. There were five students who dormed this past year hailing from cities such as Palo Alto, California and Phoenix, Arizona.
